Richard is the head honcho of the band, possessing control over much of their material. Don't take him as a control freak though, he is very determined and very clear in what he wants. The media would like to depict Rick as a tyrant, but he isn't. He seems down-to-earth and very clear in his intentions and ideas.
Richard started off in Nine Inch Nails playing the guitar, although he admits he wasn't very good, and spent most of his time smashing instruments and chasing groupies. He felt he was being Trent Reznor's punching bag, so he left to form Filter with ex-NIN programmer, Brian Liesegang, in 1994. They created Short Bus but split in 1995 as Brian felt he wasn't being given enough credit for his work. Rick then brought in Geno, Frank and Steve and created the Filter that we see now.

His older brother is Robert
Patrick, who starred in Terminator 2 opposite Arnold Schwartznegger. Robert
has replaced David Duchovney as the male lead in The X-Files.
